General Description The PD-1M is a single axis servo driver utilizing an advanced unipolar PWM method for driving low to medium power motors in a current or velocity over current control scheme. Highlights The PD-1M is designed for plug-and-play operation, meaning that no special setup is required to operate the driver as received from the factory (current mode). Nevertheless, all parameters and characteristics of the PD-1M are adjustable by the user, so that the PD-1M can be perfectly fitted to a specific application. The comprehensive, while easy-to-use manual and the setup software provide the means for fast and successful setup. Adjustable parameters include the standard input gains and control filters but also include many other parameters, such as: full scale current for maximum dynamic range and PWM frequency for minimal current ripple. Two inputs are provided (one differential with adjustable input filter) to enable Tacho or BEMF feedback for velocity mode operation. Technology The PD-1M uses Advanced Unipolar PWM Mode which minimizes the motor’s current ripple. This method switches the motor voltage between zero and the +Vs (the driver supply voltage), instead of between -Vs to +Vs, as done in the standard bipolar method. In addition, the advanced unipolar method switches the power bridge in a way that the motor command’s frequency is twice the frequency of a standard unipolar method. Altogether, the ripple current and the resulted motor heating are significantly reduced, especially important for low inductance motors. The advanced unipolar method also provides excellent response near zero. |
